The new course in motor vehicle and road user studies is only on offer in one other school in the county and is set to give pupils a head start in staying safe on the roads.
Teacher Bernie Green will put the year 10 pupils through their paces with a theory exam covering the Highway Code, motoring maths and other aspects of transport.
Mr Green said: The course includes an investigation of a traffic issue in the county or their local area such as speeding, jumping red or amber lights or using a mobile while driving.
The pupils have to design and carry out their own survey and analyse the results.
The third part of the course is a practical riding test where they have to demonstrate the safe and competent handling of a moped around a course away from the road.
It s a bit like the Certificate of Basic Training they will do when they reach 16 and wish to ride a moped on the roads, and hopefully the course will really give them a head-start in staying safe and out of trouble when they do so.
The school was keen to find a new course that enthuses their pupils

It might. And it might not. It all depends on the size of your engine. First, make sure what you have is really a moped, because motorcycles and mopeds are subject to different parking restrictions. If your ride is truly a moped (engine size less than 50 cubic centimeters), you're all set. But if you're packing more power, you're out of luck, because even if your scooter looks, rides and is the same size as a moped, it officially and legally becomes a motorcycle when the engine exceeds 50 CCs
