Electric moped
he rise of scooters and mopeds
by Sari Lindeman
The focus of the 'Start Seeing Motorcycles' campaign, increasing awareness of two-wheeled vehicles on the road, now encompasses an ever widening audience.
Along with the recent surge in gas prices, motorists have seen a transformation in the vehicles closing in around them. City streets are no longer packed only with cars, trucks, SUVs and motorcycles, but their smaller cousins, mopeds and scooters, are now more frequently interspersed between the more powerful motorcycles and the four-wheel gas guzzlers.
Some motorcyclists may not want to trade in their tough highway ride for a smaller town cruiser, but Cannon Falls' motorcyclist Brandon Cook 'sees the value of riding a scooter.' He said they are not only a convenient mode of transportation but an economical one, too.
New scooter owner Scooby (Bob) Rapp has been riding for just over a week and said that gas prices played a part in his decision to buy a scooter, but the fact that they are fun to ride was another. Venturing out of town only as far as Cannon Golf Club, he reached a speed of 60 miles per hour. That was 'faster than I wanted to go,' at least for now, he chuckled
