The Palm Village Apartments near Kansas Expressway and Battlefield were evacuated Saturday night because of a fire believed to be started by a moped parked inside a breezeway.
The Springfield Fire Department responded around 8:30 p.m. to a report of a fire at the apartment complex on S. Nettleton Avenue.
When firefighters arrived, smoke was coming out of one of the apartment buildings and a man was trapped on a second-floor balcony of the apartment complex, said Battalion Chief David Scheiderer.
Officials believe the fire was started by a moped parked in the breezeway of the fire floor, Scheiderer said.
It appears to be an accidental fire, but the cause is still under investigation at this time, Scheiderer said.
Scheiderer said the man was helped off the balcony and was not injured.
The fire was already contained by two sprinkler heads when the fire department arrived, Scheiderer said
